CHAPTER TEN

December 14th

The next morning, Claire stretched and winced. She was sore all over, particularly between her legs. Sticky, too.

At some point during the endless, heated night, Bud had stretched her legs wide apart and back in on themselves, holding them open with his hands on her knees as he pounded into her. She’d been completely open to him and he had used that fact mercilessly. She’d lost count of the number of orgasms she had. Twice during the night she tried to call a halt. “I can’t take any more,” she gasped. His answer was to growl, “Sure you can,” and thrust even harder.

He’d been right. She’d ended up clinging to him, shaking and pleading for more.

It had been fierce and wild and, at times, almost scary. He pushed her way beyond anything she recognized as herself. She’d gone up in fire and smoke to be reborn a new woman. This sexy wild woman who took risks, who pushed the envelope. Who dared, and won.

Claire Parks, Wonder Woman.

When she woke up she was instantly aware of herself, of her body, of his. She was completely in the moment, completely in her body. Her sore, well used body. Her happy body. No mind tricks pretending she was somewhere else. She didn’t have to. She was right here in bed with Bud. Warm, and not alone.

She was sleeping with her head on Bud’s chest, the hairs tickling her nose. Though she’d only slept a few hours she was completely and totally rested. Revved, even.

And completely, totally happy.

The future was a bright and shiny path ahead of her. Her new job during the day, Bud at night. Weekends together.

Her father would be a problem, that was true. Bud wasn’t like anyone her father would have dreamed of for her, but he was what she dreamed of. Or would have, if she had known men like Bud existed. Bud was her mate, made just for her. Her father would just have to recognize that fact. Daddy would come around. And if not—fuck him.

It took a second for Claire to recognize her own thoughts. She was immediately ashamed of herself. Her father loved her. If he was suffocatingly protective of her, it was because he’d lived so long with her illness, had been so scared for her and thought of her as an eternally needy and sick child. Her father would have enough trouble imagining her with any lover, let alone a tattoed lumberjack lover. Maybe he would have preferred someone who worked at the Parks Foundation, cultivated, terminally boring but properly respectful, though there were precious few men there who’d want a woman.

Accepting Bud as her lover would be hard for her father at first. Still, though he was a Parks, the fourth-generation heir to a family fortune, he was no snob. He never stopped talking about the police officer who’d rescued her from Rory Gavett. He recognized quality in people, notwithstanding their origins. Eventually he’d grow to love Bud as much as she did.
